Beaver Physician First to Earn Hospital Leadership Award

May 02, 2013

Naseib - HospitalSameh Naseib, MD, SFHM, CLHM, the Inpatient Medical Director at Beaver Medical Group, was one of the first two doctors in the nation to be awarded the distinguished Certificate of Leadership in Hospital Medicine.

He will travel to Washington, D.C. in May to receive recognition from the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) for being the first graduate of their certificate program. The SHM is the largest organization in the nation representing hospitalists. Their program for physician leaders is the most comprehensive in addressing the unique challenges within hospital medicine.

Dr. Naseib currently oversees the hospitalist programs at Redlands Community Hospital and San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital. Both programs provide high quality and exceptional inpatient care to Beaver Medical Group patients as well as other patients in the community. Hospitalists are Internal Medicine or Family Medicine physicians who specialize in inpatient care for patients admitted to the hospital. Currently Beaver Medical Group employs eighteen hospitalists who care for patients at the two local hospitals.

During the two years that it took Dr. Naseib to achieve the certification, he implemented a program at Redlands Community Hospital to increase the prevention of clots in the lungs and extremities, which can be fatal. These clots can occur when people lie down in bed or sit for an extended period of time. This program increased administration of prophylaxis treatment by Beaver Medical Group hospitalists from 80% to 100% of the patients that qualified for treatment. Now everyone gets screened at admission, and individually treated as appropriate to prevent these fatal clots. Other independent hospitalists at Redlands Community Hospital have adopted the protocol as well, and prophylaxis treatment for clots has improved all over the hospital by 74%.  The program is also being put into place currently at San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital in Banning.

As the Inpatient Medical Director, Dr. Naseib selects only high quality physicians to serve as hospitalists. He has also implemented programs to improve the transition of care for patients when they are discharged from the hospital, which as a result improves overall care and lower readmission to the hospital. “The hospitalists call the patient’s primary care physician and send over a discharge summary of the care the patient received at the hospital. We want to make sure they have all the information for timely follow up after discharge,” said Dr. Naseib.

In addition to the clot prevention project he completed for the certificate, Dr. Naseib also traveled to Arizona, Miami and Louisiana for courses. “I learned how to be an efficient leader and focus on management to achieve a strong hospitalist program. The patients benefit from the improvements in hospital care as a result,” he said.

Dr. Naseib is one of only 385 physicians nationwide to be board certified in Hospital Medicine, he achieved that certification two years ago as one of the very first hospitalists to be board certified in that field. He is board certified in Internal Medicine as well, and is a Senior Fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine and Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Naseib has been a hospitalist for more than 12 years, more than six of these years have been with Beaver Medical Group.

“I am proud to be one of Beaver Medical Group physicians because BMG has always supported and promoted quality patient care, and always puts patients first,” said Dr. Naseib.
