Before moving to the United States, Dr. Abu Alnaaj served as a senior medical officer for the United Nations Relief and Work Agency from 1997-2003 providing medical care for refugees. She practiced medicine as a general physician in Syria for 11 years, while she also volunteered as the primary care doctor for children at a local orphanage.
She received the St. Joe's organization's Excellence in Medicine Award in 2015 and the Exceptional Performance Award from the United Nations Relief and Work Agency in 2001. She says medicine is her passion.
