REDLANDS - Warm, spring days lure hikers to the trails of Redlands' hills, and the Redlands Conservancy means to show Redlanders and visitors the best hikes in the area.
The 2010 Trails at 10 Spring Series of Trail Excursions, sponsored in part by Beaver Medical Group, will be held three Saturdays in a row starting April 3.
"We've been holding these events for seven seasons now, and believe it or not, we have yet to hike all of Redlands' public trails," said Sherli Leonard, executive director of the Redlands Conservancy.
"This spring season will show off two more of Redlands' trails and one in the Crafton Hills."
On April 3, Trails at 10 participants will stage at 10 a.m. the historic Panorama Point on the high point of Sunset Drive, overlooking the San Bernardino Valley.
Leonard said the developer of the homes in that section was required by the city to develop a foot path and to preserve Panorama Point after they rerouted Sunset Drive.
"We call this the Gold Hill/Panorama Point Trail," Leonard said, adding that it goes both directions from Panorama Point.
"We will guide hikers along the short developed portions, then show them the Gold Hill Portion which utilizes an historic trail easement in the arroyo east of Sunset Drive."
On April 10, participants will meet at Lot I on the Crafton Hills College Campus where they will join the Crafton Hills Open Space Conservancy for a hike or a bicycle ride on

their trails. Bicyclists will stage at 9 a.m. and hikers will stage at 10 a.m. All bicyclists are required to wear helmets.
The April 17 Trails at 10 event will stage on San Timoteo Canyon Road at 10 a.m. at the railroad and creek crossing, and will follow the trail along the San Bernardino County Flood Control access road to the historic Carriage Trail along the foot of the hills of Smiley Heights.
According to Leonard, the Carriage Trail was used by the Smiley brothers to take their guests from the Ca on Crest Park across San Timoteo Canyon to Tremont on the south ridge for a picnic.
Today, the trail follows the remains of the road, and is used regularly by hikers, bicyclists and equestrians.
After each hike, the first 50 participants to register will receive a free lunch at 11:30 a.m.
"This is our way of thanking the participants for supporting Redlands' public trails," Leonard said.
A grant from the Beaver Medical Group sponsors the free lunches, and this year will be dedicated in the memory of Dr. Stan Korfmacher, a longtime physician at the Beaver Medical Clinic and founding board member of the Redlands Conservancy.
For the April 3 and 17 events, Leonard will prepare booklets with a brief history of the trail and the immediate area.
"We made similar booklets for two of last year's trails, and the participants seemed to appreciate them," Leonard said.
Leonard encouraged all trail enthusiasts to come to these events where they can also receive free trail guides to all of Redlands' 12 public trails. They can learn about the Redlands Conservancy and receive information about the flora and fauna of the Live Oak Canyon area in a brochure prepared by Redlands High School senior Henry Frye.
Also available will be trail etiquette guides, water bottles, "Trail Tales" book of cowboy poetry by Redlands resident Roger Bell, Orange Blossom Trail hats and other trail-related merchandise.
"We have received a donation from Redlands artist Janet Edwards, one of her lovely etchings of a Redlands trail, and we will be selling opportunity tickets at each Trails at 10 event," Leonard said. "We will conduct the drawing at the April 17 event."
All participants should wear substantial shoes and hats and bring water. Well-behaved children and dogs are always welcomed.
All of the events are free and open to the public. To make a reservation, call (909) 792-1800. Visit www.redlandsconservancy.org for more information.www.redlandsconservancy.org.
